Fall Guys Mobile: Chaotic Fun on the Go with a Few Stumbles
Translate
Thoroughly hooking in everyone when first released by the makers, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout went onto everyone's playlist by virtue of also being released as part of PlayStation Plus. It was the color and madness in its premise for battle royale action that drew me into trying it for myself and hoping against hope for something refreshing and engrossing in the multiplayer domain. Instead, I found it unmistakably delightful and accessible but ran out of juice all too soon, as can be judged.
To frame, this review is based on the midseason update one September of two thousand and twenty; even if it is avowedly stated by the developers that new content will be incorporated in due course, my reflections were based on the state of affairs at the time of play.
Gameplay: A Party Game Battle Royale
Fall Guys borrows from weird, over-the-top game shows like Takeshi's Castle and Wipeout, where players have to go through a bunch of mini-games trying to become the last one standing. You control a small jellybeanlike character that runs, jumps, and grabs through obstacle courses, memory games, team-based challenges, and chaos created at least in part by physics.
Every match consists of five rounds. The players will be eliminated one by one till the last two compete for the title of the last person standing. The controls are extremely simple, as they require nothing but movement, jumping, diving, and grabbing; therefore, everyone can play.
One of the greatest merits of this game, as a game, is that giving those controls is very simple. There is no difficult skill curve-it is just pure fun. Nevertheless, that same simplicity leads to the experience feeling a bit random at times concerning its gameplay. The physics engine and the way your character interacts with other players and obstacles are sometimes such that they provide unpredictable feelings and frustrations. This is particularly evident in a few levels when progress seems to hinge more on sheer luck than real skill.
Why Is It Fun?
What makes Fall Guys most appealing is that it is very fun and easy to get into. The bright graphics, wacky character designs, and unpredictable challenges make each round entertaining. Unlike most competitive games where accurate reflexes, skill, and great practice make you a winner, Fall Guys is much more laid-back in providing amusement for players of the highest as well as the lowest skill levels.
Another perk of this game is that progression is essentially cosmetic. Winning matches gives you in-game currency, which can be used to unlock skins, costumes, and emotes. Otherwise, there are no "pay-to-win" mechanisms at all; real money buys purely cosmetic items. This makes the game fair and accessible to everyone.
The ease of jumping into a match also helps suppress frustration; as long as you get back into a game quickly, even if that means queuing for a match right after failing, time spent waiting for the next match is minimized.
Where It Falls Flat:
Content thesaurus: Infinite time for each failure is ironically quite less fun for Fall Guys. At launch, it had only 25 mini-games, with the unusual mini-games only made for the last rounds, which forced the same challenges upon each player time in and again.
The moment you start repeating them, you begin to see patterns in each round; you figure out the best ways to complete those rounds, and it becomes less exciting.
It's improved with being played more, but another way of looking at this would be: a few of many levels start to feel less dynamic over time when you realize they have a "best route" or "optimal strategy."
Yet if the game had hundreds of levels or there was just far more variation from one round to the next, it could have been one of the finest games ever made for parties. May be with updates it gets expanded, but, for now, it feels great yet very short-lived.
Final Verdict: Good Fun, but Short-Lived
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is, of course, a quick fun game to play. It's easy to learn, visually captivating, and wonderfully chaotic. Unfortunately, it lacks that depth or variety that keeps players entertained for long.
If you're on the lookout for a fun beer and pretzels game with friends, give Fall Guys a shot. If the real craving is a deeper, more enduring multiplayer experience, the game may very well lose its ability to hold anyone's interest after a few sessions.
